അല്ലെങ്കില് ആഴക്കടലിലെ ഇരുട്ടുകള് പോലെയാകുന്നു. (അവരുടെ പ്രവര്ത്തനങ്ങളുടെ ഉപമ) . തിരമാല അതിനെ (കടലിനെ) പൊതിയുന്നു. അതിനു മീതെ വീണ്ടും തിരമാല. അതിനു മീതെ കാര്മേഘം. അങ്ങനെ ഒന്നിനു മീതെ മറ്റൊന്നായി അനേകം ഇരുട്ടുകള്. അവന്റെ കൈ പുറത്തേക്ക് നീട്ടിയാല് അതുപോലും അവന് കാണുമാറാകില്ല. അല്ലാഹു ആര്ക്ക് പ്രകാശം നല്കിയിട്ടില്ലയോ അവന്ന് യാതൊരു പ്രകാശവുമില്ല.(40)
(40) أَوْ كَظُلُمَاتٍ فِي بَحْرٍ لُجِّيٍّ يَغْشَاهُ مَوْجٌ مِنْ فَوْقِهِ مَوْجٌ مِنْ فَوْقِهِ سَحَابٌ ۚ ظُلُمَاتٌ بَعْضُهَا فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ إِذَا أَخْرَجَ يَدَهُ لَمْ يَكَدْ يَرَاهَا ۗ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَجْعَلِ اللَّهُ لَهُ نُورًا فَمَا لَهُ مِنْ نُورٍ
Or [the state of a disbeliever] is like the darkness in a vast deep sea, overwhelmed with a great wave topped by a great wave, topped by dark clouds, darkness, one above another, if a man stretches out his hand, he can hardly see it! And he for whom Allah has not appointed light, for him there is no light.(40)
