അല്ലെങ്കില് മുമ്പ് തന്നെ ഞങ്ങളുടെ പൂര്വ്വപിതാക്കള് അല്ലാഹുവോട് പങ്കചേര്ത്തിരുന്നു. ഞങ്ങള് അവര്ക്കു ശേഷം സന്തതിപരമ്പരകളായി വന്നവര് മാത്രമാണ്. എന്നിരിക്കെ ആ അസത്യവാദികള് പ്രവര്ത്തിച്ചതിന്റെ പേരില് നീ ഞങ്ങളെ നശിപ്പിക്കുകയാണോ എന്ന് നിങ്ങള് പറഞ്ഞേക്കും എന്നതിനാല്.(173)
(173) أَوْ تَقُولُوا إِنَّمَا أَشْرَكَ آبَاؤُنَا مِنْ قَبْلُ وَكُنَّا ذُرِّيَّةً مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ ۖ أَفَتُهْلِكُنَا بِمَا فَعَلَ الْمُبْطِلُونَ
Or lest you should say: "It was only our fathers afortime who took others as partners in worship along with Allah, and we were (merely their) descendants after them; will You then destroy us because of the deeds of men who practised Al-Batil (i.e. polytheism and committing crimes and sins, invoking and worshipping others besides Allah)?" (Tafsir At-Tabari).(173)
